Question & Answer

Q:

Dr. Saleh, what can you tell me about detox and rehab?

A:

These two words, detox and rehab, are used so loosely that I doubt people truly understand what they mean. In fact, it took my training in the art of magic to finally, truly understand myself what detox is and what rehab is about. Detox is not about stopping abusing mood altering drugs; it is about changing your lifestyle and living a wholesome life. Rehab is not about staying away from drugs; it is about finding the road to your inner  peace. Individuals become addicted to mood altering drugs because they do not have inner peace. The drugs are a means of escaping from a painful state of mind into a cocoon of euphoria and an altered state of mind, an altered state of consciousness. Drug use, however, is a bargain with the devil. Eventually it catches up to them and their lives unravel.

Q:

How do you help them overcome their addiction and find that inner peace?

A:

Inner peace is a state of mind that results from having security and serenity. Security is not having to worry about your basic needs, such as food, a home, safety. I don’t mean the security of having a job and money.  I am referring to a special form of security, that comes from doing the job that you really want to do. Pursuing your dreams.

Serenity is not about happiness. Everybody experiences happiness from time to time.  But happiness is fleeting. Serenity is a more constant state of mind.  Security and Serenity means finding your place in your family, community and workplace.  It’s not about having lots of money or a big house; it’s about being comfortable and pleased with what you have. It is doing what you like to do. Inner peace occurs when an individual has security and serenity.

Q:

How do you get somebody to be happy with what they have and to find serenity?

A:

It is a process. Detox and rehab are words that mean taking a path to a more wholesome life, a healthier lifestyle. It will not happen overnight and it requires work. The most difficult thing for me and my team, when an individual comes to our office requesting detox and rehab, is to change that individual’s perception, to help them make a paradigm shift and see that detox and rehab are not about quitting drugs.

To succeed, he or she  must understand that they need to make gradual changes to their daily activities. They need to decide what do they really want to do with the rest of their life.  With our treatment program, and the medicines that we use, the actual withdrawal and detoxification part is painless and easy.  However, that is only 10% of the treatment.  The hard part is the process of changing your lifestyle.  The fundamental cornerstone of this process of change, for the addicted person is attending daily AA or NA meetings.  Working the 12 steps of recovery.
